Principal's Message

Our Vision:

Highland Elementary is a community school where students are first. We are dedicated to providing lifelong learning to all students in a caring, nurturing, & safe environment.

Our Mission:

Highland Elementary, where teachers teach, students learn, & community supports.

Esteemed Highland Elementary School Families,

Thank you for visiting the Highland Elementary School webpage. As the principal of Highland Elementary, I want to welcome you to our school.  I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with the highly qualified and dedicated staff, the wonderful students, and the supportive parents.

Our staff is committed to working with students and their families as a team. The rigorous curriculum is directly aligned to the Louisiana Common Core State Standards. To help each child achieve to his/her fullest potential, the school provides both enrichment and intervention support for students. We believe in knowing each child by “name and need.”

Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy (retrieved from http://www.corestandards.org/

Please plan to learn more about our Common Core State Standards and how it relates to your child’s grade level curriculum and testing during our annual Parent Night events scheduled throughout the school year.

Research shows that parental involvement in a child’s education benefits the child. These benefits are higher levels of academic achievement, positive attitudes, and greater maturity and responsibility. Because the benefits are so solid, I urge you to take part as much as possible in the life of our school. It does take an entire village to raise a child. Your assistance as a volunteer would be extremely valuable to our students. Consider becoming a school volunteer. There are many areas where your help would be appreciated.

It is very important that children are present and on time everyday!  Instruction begins once our children enter the classroom.  Being on time, students will benefit tremendously and not fall behind in valuable instruction time. Student attendance, including tardiness, will be monitored very closely. In the best interest of our children, the HES attendance team will adhere to the St. Landry Parish School Board Attendance Policy and will be creating a chronic absence watch list, making daily phone calls, and we will be making referrals to truancy court if necessary.

School doors will open at 7:15 am for breakfast. The breakfast line will close promptly at 7:45 am.

Entry and Dismissal Policies

Also, please note our bell schedule has not changed. Our school day begins at 7:50 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Children arriving after 7:50 am will be marked tardy. When your child is tardy, you are expected to sign-in your child in the front office before they are allowed to enter the classroom. Also, we will strictly enforce the No Early check out policy. The dismissal bell rings at 3:00 pm. That is when school doors will open for dismissal unless previous written documentation has been provided to the school. Early dismissals are a significant interruption to instruction and must be limited.

We will continue to focus on maintaining a safe and orderly environment in our school, providing intervention and enrichment experiences for our children, and engaging them in complex reading and writing tasks that will prepare them to enter Central Middle school, Eunice Junior High school, Eunice High school and colleges of their choice.  Our teachers have been coming back to school early in order to prepare their classrooms for our children. The focus will be to continue to teach Common Core State Standards in order to prepare our children for success in grade level expectations and for state testing.

We welcome all our families back to another exciting, challenging year. Always contact your child’s teacher first with any concerns you may have. Please know that I am available to meet with you in person or talk to you over the telephone to discuss any concerns you may have. As the instructional leader of this campus, I am responsible for all decisions made in the best interest of your children. I look forward to a great year and to meeting all our new children and their families.

At Highland Elementary School, your children will be safe, they will be loved, and they will learn. Believe and achieve with us! Join us in learning, teaching and leading! After all, we are ALL on the same team!

Excellence is Possible!

We have work to do, but not impossible work. It is a matter of focus. It is a matter of appropriate criteria. It is a matter of communication. It is a matter of collaboration. It is a matter of will.
